Cyberpunk Says...

Cyberpunk fiction often depicts large corporations as more powerful than governments themselves, with a wide scope of capabilities and very little consequence to their gross misconduct. Human lives are reduced to a question of profit and loss, as was the case with the Tyrell Corporation in Blade Runner.

This dystopian perspective is truly not that removed from the real world. Capitalism itself relies heavily on the question of prioritization: to prioritize anything outside of generating revenue immediately risks the very foundation of a multitude of organizations. It's why Disney treats animators terribly, and why the niche marketplaces of webcomics or galleries severely underpay and mistreat their content creators.

The American military-industrial complex, which includes defense contractors, government agencies, politians, and soldiers quite literally infiltrate every single level of international society (Weber 2019). Ghost in the Shell serves as wonderful propaganda, arguably, in favor of the militarization of technology; the line between military and civilian life dissolves completely, as facial recognition and drone tech are as heavily utilized in the media as they are in the modern world.

Lockheed Martin, one of the largest defense contractors in the United States, perfectly depicts the blend of corporate profit and national defense.

In the year 2020, Lockheed recieved over $75 billion in Pentagon contracts, a figure that was somehow more than the entire budget of the State Department and USAID combined (Hartung & Semler 2025). In spite of critiques for the F-35 fighter jet being overpriced and underperforming, Lockheed continues recieving massive funding with little to no governmental oversight, mirroring the Tyrell Corporation's prioritization of technological dominance over all ethical obligations.

The military-industrial complex thrives on constant conflict, which directly impacts the quality of life worldwide and the national budget. In 2023, the budget for the military reached $1.14 trillion dollars; for contrast, the budget for public health that same year was $100 billion. The budget for education, just to further the point, was $84 billion.

The Department of Homeland Security recieved more than seven times the funding for the Centers for Disease control over the past seven years. The Congressional Budget Office found that the U.S. military could save $100 billion without changing the country's national security strategy, and a Department of Defense study found $125 billion in unnecessary back-office expenses could easily be trimmed. Instead, recent years have found an increase in military budget, cutting even more funding from healthcare, education, public transportation, energy, and housing (National Priorities Project 2023).

Glancing Over Policies

The military industrial complex does not merely include manufacturing weapons. It shapes foreign policy, surveillance practices, and domestic policing. Defense contractors lobby Congress, fund think tanks, and advocate for contracts that continue their powerful hold on global politics, much like cyberpunk's themes of surveillance capitalism.

Globally, the military destabilizes various countries by promoting military solutions over diplomatic ones. There are a plethora of examples: currently, America's seige on Iran stems from America's military support of an ongoing genocide, and the American support for Middle Eastern suffering stems from American interests in natural resources and political alliances.

America's bombing of a girl's school in Iran served no political interests, offered no economic benefit, and established no military strategy outside of maximizing harm and grief to leverage against American enemies, the vast majority of whom are merely civilians.

Glimpsing Our Future

The unchecked growth, lack of transparency, and prioritization of profit absolutely indicates that cyberpunk was right. Corporations influence foreign policy more than diplomats. Surveillance is privatized. War is automated; people have been expecting a so-called "World War III" for nearly a decade. Profit literally dictates what matters more, fear tactics or a school's worth of elementary lives.

Corporate Domination and Cyberpunk Societies: Fiction or Real-life?

One of the main characteristics of societies in cyberpunk stories is that corporations are more powerful than the government. They control the world and the people based on their most important goal: profit. In these stories, money matters more than human lives, which is something to be scared of. The worst thing about that is to notice the similarities with real life. Nowadays, big technology companies have great power over individuals. Because they have access to massive amounts of data - such as what people browse, their location, what they buy - they can influence people’s decisions without them even noticing. This is clearly a form of control, and it brings us close to those societies we are so scared about – at least I am - from Cyberpunk stories.

What is really happening?

To make this clear, let’s bring some theory to the discussion. Shoshana Zuboff – American author and professor at Harvard Business School – created the term Surveillance Capitalism to explain how the control by big companies is established. It describes how companies collect people’s data and use it to: 1. Predict what they will do and 2. Influence their decisions. Zuboff explains that companies like Google and Facebook make money by collecting and using personal data (Zuboff, 2019), which means that instead of selling products, companies sell information about people.

The Cambridge Analytica Scandal

In the 2010s, Facebook was involved in the Cambridge Analytica Scandal, where millions of users had their personal data collected without their consent to create highly targeted political messages for campaigns during the 2016 election (Kozlowska, 2018). This episode exemplifies how corporations sell and use people’s data to influence their decisions and thoughts. It shows how powerful corporations have become in our society and how they can influence democratic processes, such as the elections. Additionally, the fact that a company can affect political outcomes like that challenges the government authority.

Are we heading toward Cyberpunk Societies?

Another perspective we can discuss about this situation is how most people are not aware about how much influence corporations have in our society. The truth is, many users put their personal information on websites, without even understanding the effect this can have. People make themselves vulnerable to manipulation simply by completing a survey or a questionnaire. Honestly, it’s like these big corporations see people as sources of data that can be used for profit or strategic purposes. And isn’t this the key idea in cyberpunk stories? Where people are treated less like individuals with their own identities and lives, but more like participants of a greater system of power and control moved by profit. I hate to admit it, but these societies are not fully fictional anymore.

The Tyrell Corporation in Blade Runner

The movie Blade Runner illustrates this situation really well. The Tyrell Corporation creates replicants and uses them to obtain profit, without even considering their humanity or rights. Similarly, Facebook uses people’s data as a resource, which suggests a priority of interests related to profit, rather than people’s rights of privacy, autonomy, and even society’s democracy. Thus, in both situations – fictional and real-life – individuals are treated as tools within a larger system controlled by a powerful corporation, indicating that our society is heading toward cyberpunk’s corporate dominance.

A Globalized Issue

The growth of corporate dominance is not just a problem in the United States. It is true that American companies tend to have more freedom and can operate within less strict rules, but other countries have been dealing with this situation as well. Countries in Europe, for example, have really strict laws about privacy to try to limit how corporations use personal data. Meanwhile, in China, corporate control is tied to the government, which means companies don’t have that much freedom to act. Therefore, even though corporate control and power is dealt differently across countries, it is noticeable that it’s a global issue enabled by technology and globalization. Because of that, it is extremely important to discuss about this in news, media, and in classes, so people are not oblivious to how their personal information is being used and how vulnerable their privacy is in a world moved, and perhaps controlled, by technology and profit.

The issues that we have been exploring all semester bring us to one central question. Are we heading faster to a future that seemed in the far distance? Will corporations dominate and deteriorate the world as we know it? And if so, how will we stop it? Not only does cyberpunk warn us about this future, but it may also be giving us solutions on how to stop it from happening. From the Tyrell Corporation in Blade Runner to the pill funders in Machinehood, we see the damage that large corporations can have on the function of our society as a whole. One of the biggest ways we see corporation domination is in the realm of privacy and surveillance capitalism, a space that may too soon be out of our control. When you use services such as Google and Facebook, there are agreements to the use of your data and personal information that you sign off on every time. In a book written about the current surveillance state, Shoshana Zubodf writes that the data gathered by these companies is used by other companies to predict and influence our behaviors (Kavenna, 2019). Though you may not be aware that you are allowing the use of your data by other companies, if you read the lengthy privacy statements that many just accept, you will find your acceptance to these rules. More corporations such as Tik Tok use algorithms to gather data, facial expressions, locations, and voiceprints to build profiles on who they think that you are and what you would like (10 Eye-Opening Examples of Surveillance Capitalism in Action - VOICES of CAPITALISM, 2025). Though we may like this because it shows us funny videos, what happens when the algorithm changes? In fact, after most of TikTok was bought by the U.S. the privacy policy changed to allow precise location data if you have your location services on (Lin, 2026). This comes at a time where ICE is being deployed in heavily immigrant populated areas and people are being killed by said ICE agents. It makes it that much scarier that there is a way to find your exact location just by trying to find entertainment through Tik Tok. Though not exactly the same, the ideas of constantly tracking and using our data to increase their ad revenue, track our locations, and push propaganda into our lives is reminiscent of the pill funders in Machinehood. In the novel, the pill funders are an amalgamation of all of the wealthy corporations and wealthy people who essentially control the world by making them reliant on their pills. In a similar way, there is a group of a few corporations that are controlling what we see, hear, and interact with through privacy policies. Because of this comparison, I am led to believe that we are not as far away from a cyberpunk corporation-controlled future as it seems. Specifically under the Trump presidency, we stray further and further away from a world where we have personal autonomy and closer to a world with heavy cyberpunk surveillance.

When Corporations Outgrow Governments: Are We Living in a Cyberpunk Prelude?

Cyberpunk has always imagined a world where corporations eclipse governments, turning human lives into resources to be optimized and exploited. From the Tyrell Corporation in Blade Runner to the profit-driven pill funders in Machinehood, these narratives feel less like distant fiction and more like distorted reflections of our present reality. The question is no longer whether cyberpunk is going to be a reality; it’s whether we are already living in its early stages. One of the clearest real-world parallels to cyberpunk corporate dominance can be found in the rise of the gig economy, led by companies like Uber. Uber has transformed labor by redefining workers as “independent contractors,” allowing the company to avoid providing benefits such as healthcare, job security, and minimum wage guarantees. According to a 2021 report by the Economic Policy Institute, gig workers often earn less than traditional employees after accounting for expenses like gas and vehicle maintenance. This mirrors the labor dynamics in Sleep Dealer, where workers are reduced to remote-controlled bodies, valued only for their productivity and easily replaceable. Similarly, pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer demonstrate how corporate power can shape life-and-death outcomes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, debates over vaccine patents highlighted how intellectual property laws can restrict access to life-saving medicine, particularly in lower-income countries. While Pfizer argued that patents were necessary to fund innovation, critics like Doctors Without Borders argued that these protections prioritized profit over global health equity. This echoes Machinehood, where access to performance enhancing drugs determines survival in a hyper competitive economy. In both cases, corporations exert control over the conditions of life itself. Another striking example is surveillance capitalism, practiced by tech giants like Google. Google collects vast amounts of user data to refine advertising algorithms, effectively turning personal behavior into a commodity. Scholar Shoshana Zuboff describes this as a system where human experience is “raw material” for profit. This concept aligns closely with cyberpunk’s recurring theme of commodified identity, where even thoughts and behaviors are no longer private but monetized assets. So, are we heading toward full cyberpunk-style corporate dominance? The answer is complicated. On one hand, corporations today wield unprecedented influence over economies, labor systems, and even political processes. Tech companies lobby governments, shape public discourse, and influence elections through control of information platforms. However, it would be an oversimplification to claim that dystopia is inevitable. Unlike in many cyberpunk worlds, modern societies still maintain democratic institutions that can check corporate power. For example, the European Union has implemented strict data protection laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which limits how companies can collect and use personal data. In the United States, antitrust discussions surrounding companies like Google and Amazon indicate growing awareness of corporate overreach. Cultural perspectives also play a crucial role in shaping responses to corporate power. In the United States, corporate influence is often normalized under free-market ideals, whereas in other regions, such as parts of Europe, there is stronger resistance to corporate control. This suggests that cyberpunk’s dystopia is not a universal destiny but a possibility shaped by cultural values and political choices. Ultimately, cyberpunk serves less as a prediction and more as a warning. It exaggerates current trends to reveal the consequences of unchecked corporate power. If cyberpunk teaches us anything, it is that the future is not predetermined. Corporations may be growing stronger, but so too is our awareness of their influence. Whether we move toward a cyberpunk reality or away from it depends on how we respond today.

When the System Reads My Skin

One specific boundary that has shifted significantly in the past five years is the collapse between health data privacy and social identity surveillance, particularly in how biometric and algorithmic health systems categorize bodies in ways that disproportionately affect Black women. In recent years, technology has increasingly transformed people’s bodies and personal health information into data that systems use to make life-changing decisions. This shift especially impacts Black women because these technologies are often biased and misread or misinterpret their bodies, reinforcing the idea that the boundary between private identity and public control is no longer firmly maintained.

Algorithmic Bias in Healthcare

Over the past five years, algorithms used to predict health risks, such as hospital admission likelihood or treatment prioritization, have demonstrated clear racial bias. For example, a clinical algorithm widely used by hospitals to determine which patients required additional care was found to favor white patients over Black patients. Black patients had to be significantly sicker than white patients in order to receive the same level of care recommendations. This occurred because the algorithm was trained on historical healthcare spending data, which showed long-standing inequalities in access to care and financial investment in Black patients (Grant, 2025). Additionally, many sensors in point-of-care testing devices and wearable technologies perform less accurately on darker skin tones, which can negatively affect diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment outcomes.

This shift is largely driven by technological and economic forces. Artificial intelligence and machine learning systems are often trained on datasets that do not adequately represent minority populations, allowing these gaps and biases to persist. As biometric and health technologies move into everyday use, the consequences of these inaccuracies become more widespread and impactful. Companies are frequently pressured to deploy products quickly for competitive and financial gain, often without conducting inclusive testing. This economic incentive accelerates the erosion of the boundary between private health information and public, system-driven classification.

Power, Profit, and Control

Cyberpunk literature frequently explores the collapse of boundaries through dystopian systems that reduce individuals to data profiles and identity categories. Similarly, modern health and biometric technologies increasingly invade personal privacy and autonomy by translating people into datasets that determine how they are treated within medical, social, and institutional systems. Black women, who often experience overlapping racial, gender, and technological biases, face a compounded burden. Their bodies and identities are more likely to be misclassified in ways that affect not only health outcomes, but also interactions with broader systems such as employment and public surveillance. This reinforces a cycle in which the boundary between the self and external systems of control continues to dissolve.

The primary beneficiaries of this shift are technology companies and healthcare payers, who profit financially and reduce costs by relying on automated systems rather than human labor and individualized care. Those most impacted are communities with less power to challenge or question data-driven decisions. Entities that design and control these algorithms occupy a particularly powerful position, as they define what counts as “normal” data and shape who profits from these systems. This raises critical ethical and political questions, including what rights individuals should have over their personal health and identity data, and how society can ensure that technology does not replicate or reinforce historical patterns of oppression.

In conclusion, the collapse of the boundary between health data privacy and identity surveillance reflects key cyberpunk themes, especially when viewed through the lived experiences of Black women. This shift highlights the urgent need for accountability, equitable technological design, and policy interventions that rebalance these boundaries and ensure that technological progress serves all communities fairly.

In a cyberpunk world, identity isn’t just who we are—it’s what corporations and governments can verify, commodify, and control. Today, the boundary between physical identity and digital identity is eroding. What once was a legal document in a wallet is now a constellation of biometric scans, mobile IDs, and digital wallets that follow us everywhere we go. This isn’t tomorrow’s speculation—it’s happening now.

The Boundary That Has Shifted

Historically, identity was rooted in the physical: passports, birth certificates, social security cards. In the digital age, identity became credentials we entered online—usernames, passwords, PINs. But in 2025 digital identity systems are increasingly biometric, mobile, and machine-readable, blurring the line between who you are and what a machine recognizes you as.

Governments and corporations are building systems that link your face, fingerprint, voice, or palm directly to essential services like travel, banking, healthcare, and even public benefits. The European Union’s eIDAS 2.0 initiative is creating a digital identity wallet usable across all member states, promising convenience but also redefining what it means to prove who you are in a digital society.

Meanwhile, biometric techniques—once exotic—now fuel everyday authentication. From palm biometrics in stores and hospitals to mobile IDs on a phone, the move toward identity tied to our bodies rather than passwords is accelerating.

What’s Driving the Shift

Technological forces: Biometric systems and mobile identity standards have improved dramatically. Industry reports show passwordless authentication increasingly replacing traditional login methods, with biometrics offering convenience and security advantages—at least superficially.

Economic incentives: Tech companies and governments alike see huge value in digital identity platforms. They reduce fraud, streamline services, and open doors to new monetizable data streams. No database is just for ID anymore—it’s also a goldmine for behavior, spending patterns, and social metrics.

Political and social pressures: The push for digital identity isn’t just consumer convenience. Governments argue it enhances security, prevents fraud, and enables digital citizenship in an era of global mobility. But critics warn that once biometric identity systems become ubiquitous, opting out becomes increasingly difficult.

How This Connects to Cyberpunk

Cyberpunk fiction vividly illustrates worlds where identity is mutable, encoded, and monitored by systems beyond individual control. In Neuromancer or Snow Crash, identity chips, corporate databases, and neural codes make every person traceable and manipulable. Today’s digital identity systems reflect that logic: your face, your palm, your biometric signature becomes a node in a global network, shaped by technical architectures and power structures.

Cyberpunk theory teaches us to see how technologies don’t merely serve users but also reshape social relations. The transition to biometric, mobile IDs recasts identity itself as something processable, shareable, and surveilled—no longer purely personal, but infrastructural.

Who Benefits—and Who’s at Risk?

Potential benefits:

  1. Faster border crossings and secure travel documentation.
  2. Passwordless security that reduces traditional cyber-attacks.
  3. Access to services for people without traditional documentation.

Risks and harms:

  1. Surveillance and privacy erosion: Biometric systems can track movements across spaces, linking online and offline behaviors in ways never before possible.

  2. Exclusion and inequality: Individuals without compatible devices or digital literacy risk being shut out of essential systems.

  3. Permanent identifiers: Unlike passwords, biometric traits cannot be changed. If compromised, your faceprint or fingerprint is compromised for life.

These concerns echo fundamental cyberpunk anxieties about surveillance, agency, and control. When identity becomes a data point indexed and algorithmically processed, the human subject transforms into a profile—a mathematical object to be scored, categorized, and predicted.

Ethical Questions We Must Ask

Consent or coercion? When a digital ID is required for basic services, can consent truly be voluntary?

Who controls your identity? Is it a corporate cloud, a nation-state database, or the individual themselves?

What happens when borders are digital rather than physical? There’s a powerful allure to seamless global identity—but also a danger of borderless surveillance.

Understanding the collapse between physical and digital identity is urgent because it affects every person with a smartphone, a passport, or an online presence. The question isn’t whether identity is changing—but whether we will shape that change or be shaped by it.

Personal Privacy in the Digital Age

One of the defining features of cyberpunk fiction is the breakdown of boundaries between humans and machines, nations and corporations, and especially between public and private life. What once felt like a dystopian exaggeration is increasingly becoming reality. Over the past five years, the boundary between personal privacy and corporate/governmental surveillance has shifted dramatically. The line separating what belongs to the individual and what can be collected, analyzed, and sold has grown thinner than ever before. A clear contemporary example of collapsing privacy boundaries is emerging in Edmonton, where police have launched a pilot program using body cameras equipped with AI to recognize faces from a “high-risk” watch list in real time. Ever wonder who watches surveillance cameras beyond federal agents, police, and security personnel? Artificial intelligence has become quiet yet incredibly advanced—capable of tracking personal information and recognizing faces with astonishing accuracy. But where does AI store this information, and who has access to it?

Before the rise of AI, surveillance systems relied on continuous 24/7 recording that had to be carefully monitored by human caretakers. These individuals ensured that footage was not distorted, corrupted, or lost due to limited storage space. According to the Security Industry Association, AI can monitor and analyze network traffic in real time, strengthening network security and identifying suspicious activities such as unauthorized access attempts or unusual data transfers. When these activities are detected, users can take immediate action to block or contain potential threats.

While many argue that AI improves security, it also introduces significant challenges. One major concern is security breaches, as AI systems themselves can become targets for cyberattacks. Another issue is compliance, which is essential to avoid legal consequences and requires adherence to national and international regulations governing the use of AI. Addressing these concerns may require collaboration not only with AI technologies themselves but also with AI developers, cybersecurity professionals, and regulatory experts. AI holds the promise of a more holistic approach to security; however, many people place trust in AI without fully understanding where their data is stored or how it is used.

This shift reflects a cyberpunk-like reality where high technology is paired with low transparency where advanced technologies coexist with humans in everyday life. Surveillance cameras are now embedded into our devices, networks, and infrastructure, allowing AI to operate with minimal human oversight.

Facial recognition has advanced significantly over the decades and has blended seamlessly into daily life. I assume you are reading this. Not because I have done anything remarkable, but because in a world shaped by digital systems, observation has become routine rather than something exceptional.

Five years ago, I still thought of privacy as something I possessed, imperfectly, maybe, but meaningfully. I assumed that my movements, conversations, and online habits were largely my own unless I chose to share them. That assumption has quietly worn away. Not through a single policy change or technological breakthrough, but through countless small decisions like agreeing to terms of service, enabling location access, and storing personal information in the cloud.

There was no clear moment when the boundary disappeared. It simply stopped being visible.

What has shifted most in recent years is not the existence of surveillance, but its structure. Governments increasingly rely on private companies to collect and organize personal data and then access it through legal requests or market transactions. According to reporting by Proton, authorities worldwide, particularly in the United States of course, have dramatically increased their requests for user data from major technology firms, often with limited transparency and oversight (Koch, 2025). In this arrangement, corporate data collection and state surveillance are no longer meaningfully separate.

This shift reflects a broader normalization of data as a form of currency. Individuals exchange personal information for convenience, connectivity, and access to digital services. Companies monetize that data. Governments acquire it. Each step is justified as efficient, legal, or necessary. However, when taken together, they blur the line between consent and compliance.

The American Civil Liberties Union has documented how U.S. agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security have purchased location data from brokers rather than obtaining warrants, effectively bypassing constitutional safeguards (Venkatesh & Yu, 2026). While the proponents argue this practice operates within existing legal frameworks, it raises important questions about whether privacy protections remain meaningful when personal data is treated as a commodity.

Similar patterns appear beyond the United States. In Jordan, authorities reportedly used phone-extraction tools to access activists’ devices, targeting political dissent through technological means (Kirchgaessner, 2026). These cases highlight how surveillance technologies are easily transferred across borders and contexts, and how they often impact those already vulnerable to state power.

Even technical protections such as encryption, which are framed as firm barriers to access, prove now to be conditional. In early 2026, Microsoft confirmed that it provided encryption keys to U.S. authorities when legally compelled to do so, prompting concern among privacy advocates about precedent and potential misuse (O’Brien, 2026). Security, it seems, depends less on technological limits than on institutional trust.

To be clear, surveillance systems are frequently defended on grounds of public safety, efficiency, and national security. These concerns deserve serious consideration. Yet the collective effect of extensive data collection and expanded access warrants equally serious scrutiny. Who benefits from this visibility? Who bears the risks? And how should societies balance collective security with individual autonomy?

I do not offer simple answers. What I do offer is a sense that we have crossed a boundary without fully acknowledging it. Privacy has now been redefined and negotiated continuously in ways that are often invisible to the people most affected. It is well on its way to completely vanishing.
